Rope Starts

Outline- This is great for getting the concept of being on the line at the start of a race. I found it good for beginners too, it stopped everyone sailing off for a picnic at 10seconds and is  also great fun to do.

  1. Set a normal starting line.

  2. Tie a visible rope to the pin end and hold it taught on the committee boat like a finishing line at the end of a running race. I prefer to hold it at one end for safety.

  3. Have a competition to see who can get their mast (forestay if it’s a double helm) closest to the rope without touching it. It’s easy to do this one boat at a time in a line.

Experienced sailors could have the additional task of holding there for ten seconds. You’d want to have something set up to keep the others occupied; maybe they could try approach from the pin end.

  4. A fleet rope start is interesting but watch put for collisions, it depends on number of boats, weather etc.

  5. If you’re looking for more fun, you could try a downwind rope start.
(Don’t hold on to that rope too tight!)
