Outline: A very brief but fun exercise to demonstrate boat trim.
- Start a short race.
- Have a third of the boats put all their weight to the back of the boat so the bow is out of the water, a third with the weight up front until they’re nose diving and the remainder as normal.
- Drive alongside them and ask why they’re going so slow compared to the others. Talk about weight on the different points of sailing eg sitting back on a run etc.
- Switch to the other half and try again.
- Give the best effort the title of Drag Queen, and a wig if you’ve one handy.
- This may lead to capsizing bow over stern but I’m always afraid someone’s going to get it too right and a boat is going to land on someone, which may cause injury or death. We’ve all done it as sailors but unless you know a safe way that I don’t, I wouldn’t recommend it.
