Drag Queens vs. Nose Divers

Outline: A very brief but fun exercise to demonstrate boat trim.

  1. Start a short race.
  2. Have a third of the boats put all their weight to the back of the boat so the bow is out of the water, a third with the weight up front until they’re nose diving and the remainder as normal.
  3. Drive alongside them and ask why they’re going so slow compared to the others. Talk about weight on the different points of sailing eg sitting back on a run etc.
  4. Switch to the other half and try again.
  5. Give the best effort the title of Drag Queen, and a wig if you’ve one handy.
  6. This may lead to capsizing bow over stern but I’m always afraid someone’s going to get it too right and a boat is going to land on someone, which may cause injury or death. We’ve all done it as sailors but unless you know a safe way that I don’t, I wouldn’t recommend it.
